In Saint Joseph's salons on the main floor is a two person show, “I Recognize You” featuring work by Kevin Sabo. This exhibition showcases the devotion and exhaustive detail in creating incredibly sophisticated works that obscures the portrait in a way that allows us to hone in on details we may normally miss when looking at others.
I Recognize You is a dual exhibition featuring works by Jennie Ottinger, represented by Rebecca Camacho Presents and Kevin Sabo.
Based on news footage, official photography and photos torn from the tabloids, Jennie Ottginer’s paintings pretend to be dashed off, but in fact, are painstakingly imprecise. The joy of the series is that Ottinger’s surreal renditions force us to look at those famous moments with fresh eyes and from new angles.
Kevin Sabo’s works are based around the figure, often playing with character and fashion. Themes of queer identity, satire, existential revelations can be spotted throughout his expressive work. Sabo describes his paintings as large sketches, as they are never predetermined ahead of the end result.
Although these artists have entirely singular approaches to their practices and subject matter, they both devote exhaustive detail to strategically obscuring their portraits to redirect our focus.
