During the early 90s, fine art photographer Chloe Sherman began documenting a generation of young, self-identified queers in San Francisco, capturing their collective creativity, pride, and strident defiance of cultural norms.
Chloe’s photos reflect a nuanced view of an evolving community. Some of the people in these photos have become well-respected writers, directors, professors; others died from alcohol, drugs, or suicide. Some moved across the country, others married and settled down. Many transitioned from their birth gender. And, most of the San Francisco bars, clubs and cafes featured throughout her photography no longer exist today.
RENEGADE San Francisco: the 1990s reveals the revolutionary attitudes of the people in her photographs and features over 30 photographic prints all shot with 35mm film. RENEGADE not only introduces the viewer to a group of uniquely San Francisco queers during the 1990s, but offers a glimpse of the freedom and flamboyance of gender bending, hopeful, fashionable young people during a pivotal time in SF queer history. This was a time when wayward youth, outcasts, and artists could show up, join forces, make new rules, work little, and live free.
Chloe Sherman lives and works in the Bay Area. Her work stems from a deep commitment to capturing the vibrancy, resilience, tenderness, and joy that she sees in people, particularly within subcultures marginalized or derided by mainstream society.
