“This work externalizes a fascination, not entirely romantic nor platonic, but an ambiguous longing to know and understand these maleness's and figures I've intimately watched; glimpses of body and behavior that can't seem to escape my mind's eye, despite having matured clarity to save myself from comparison." - Ryan Robichaux
Ryan Robichaux is a trans, multidisciplinary artist whose work aims to explore the nuances of contemporary presentations of gender and masculinity through motifs of traditional Americana.
Robichaux’s formative years in central and east Texas allow him access to nostalgias of the American west. Exploring dualities of masculinity through “acceptable interactions” - a football tackle, rough housing, or a bro hug – Ryan Robichaux weaves his personal experience as a trans man to expose nuanced tenderness and intimacy in the male experience. Examining the ways his own body has both succeeded and failed in matching traditional expectations of maleness, Robichaux begins a discourse about the universal need to compare oneself to societally-imposed standards, driven by his own perception and experiences through his trans identity.
